I'm half the admin team of Fosstodon along with @kev. He and I have been doing this for just shy of 5 years. I work in IT generalist type job that's usually scripting/process automation and data transportation. I'm a father of a good sized brood and happily married to a woman much smarter than I am. In my spare time I blink and it's gone.
Faith, burnout, Linux?
I worked in IT for a couple decades, burned out, went back to college and got my bachelor's in literature. Went to grad school, burnt out again.
Life's an adventure.
I love linux, sci-fi, people of all walks, and Jesus. I'm not preachy.
Been using linux off and on since 1997, steadily since 2000, and constantly since 2019. :D
Big believer in free and open source software. Linux is freedom.
Manjaro is my pragmatic distro of choice, but Debian is home. <3

The fediverse is a true social network, in that it actually requires you to do "networking" and be "social."
Think of it like a crowded pub. There are no celebrities here. You'll need to make an effort to meet people, no algorithm pushes content on you. To find more people, and new content, you'll need to talk to people, and see what they're into. You can move around, but you need to get along with people sitting near you.
These are commonly labeled "problems," but I consider them "features." #feditips
I’ve been on here a while but never wrote an #introduction post so here it is.
My name is Mark thought most people call me JR (J.R. not “junior”). I am a believer and follower of Christ. My passion is #software #engineering and I’ve been at it professionally for over 14 years. Though I mostly develop for the web I enjoy working with the #fullstack including the hardware and architecture of it.
🧐 Experiment with different accounts on different instances (sites like https://instances.social/list can help you). Every instance has different feel, vibe and community (and rules). Find one that you prefer or use mutliple accounts/personas/instances.
❓ Ask around! Many people will be pleased to guide you.. There is no stupid question :)
💖 Be part of making the Fediverse better and more welcoming!
🎉 Welcome to newcomers! 🎉
A few personal tips:
👌 the Fediverse is NOT twitt*r! enjoy a more relaxed, courteous, benevolent way of interacting! you are part of it!
🤚 introduce yourself! also fill bio and post a couple "toots" before following people to have more chance they'll follow back..
👍 favourite and follow generously! This is how to create link around. No algorithm-god is spying on you, telling you who to follow, what to read! \o/
⚠️ many people care about CW... learn about that
I'll be curious to see the counts posted during this influx of users to the #Fediverse. I hope it continues to grow.
Added microformats, rss feed, sitemap, and an index.json file to my personal site. Easy to forget what WordPress gives you for free.
Also improved my Lighthouse score in the process.
For the new computer build I picked up the new Fractal Design Torrent Nano RGB case in black. It looks sweet and never have I ever built a computer with RGB. This will be the first and the motherboard, ram, and case all have RGB 😆
It'll be interesting how that works (or doesn't) with linux. I've seen some tools but maybe running the official tools through wine could work.
I've been wanting to try out Jigsaw from Tighten (https://jigsaw.tighten.com) for a while now and finally migrated my personal website over to it.
I wanted something small and fast that just generates a directory tree with html files. Jigsaw checks all those boxes. I love WordPress but I don't need it for such a simple website.
Simple terminal-like design with a CRT effect and light/dark modes.
The last time I built a desktop computer was back in 2015 which had a i5-4690k with 16GB RAM. I’ve been itching to upgrade but the past two years put a wrench in that. Decided to pull the trigger today and picked up a Ryzen 7 5800X with 32GB RAM to build this weekend. Waiting a bit longer for the GPU upgrade though (hopefully not too much longer). Went from a GTX 970 to currently a Quadro P4000 and I’m considering a RX 6800XT next.

Wanted to share a method of how we're converting some blocks in CoBlocks into #WordPress core blocks. A lot of "early day" blocks today could become extensions of core blocks, block variations, or block patterns. The Block Editor has come a long way. https://github.com/godaddy-wordpress/coblocks/pull/2325
